While asylum seekers cannot register as jobseekers, the number receiving temporary work permits has risen sharply, Labour Minister Georges Mischo has reported.
In a response to a question from MP Corinne Cahen of the Democratic Party (DP), Minister of Labour Georges Mischo clarified that asylum seekers are not eligible to register as jobseekers with the National Employment Agency (ADEM).
However, the Minister reported a significant increase in the number of temporary work permits granted to asylum seekers. This rise is attributed in part to the government's simplification of application procedures. The figures provided show a steady climb, from 170 permits in 2023 to 358 in 2024, reaching 463 already this year. Employers interested in hiring an asylum seeker can also apply for such a temporary permit.
Regarding employment sectors, MP Cahen enquired if training opportunities would be expanded beyond the common areas of cleaning and kitchen work. Minister Mischo confirmed that a pilot project is in the works to explore involving more sectors, though he did not specify which ones.
