The government has formally offered to purchase the bankrupt Liberty Steel site in Dudelange, aiming to repurpose the industrial zone for economic revitalisation and job creation.

The Luxembourg government has taken formal steps to acquire the bankrupt Liberty Steel facility in Dudelange, submitting an official offer to the receiver during Tuesday's Government Council meeting.

According to a Ministry of the Economy statement released the same day, the proposed acquisition aims to repurpose the industrial site to support national economic development and restore employment opportunities. The property has remained largely inactive since Liberty Steel's 2024 bankruptcy, which left approximately 100 employees still technically under contract with the defunct company.

While specific redevelopment plans remain under consideration, ministry officials confirmed they are evaluating multiple options – including potential defence-related projects – for the industrial zone.

The government's intervention effectively prevents the site's sale to private buyers, ensuring public control over its future use.
