Tosyali Holding has abruptly withdrawn its offer to acquire the Liberty Steel plant in Dudelange, throwing the future of 150 jobs into uncertainty and prompting urgent union demands for government intervention.
Turkish industrial group Tosyali Holding has withdrawn its offer to acquire the Liberty Steel plant in Dudelange, according to business magazine Paperjam. The news, initially reported as a rumour by L'Essentiel, was confirmed to Paperjam by the Ministries of Economy and Labour.
The withdrawal prolongs uncertainty for the site's 150 employees, who have faced instability since ArcelorMittal sold the facility six years ago. The sale was part of ArcelorMittal's bid to acquire Italian steelmaker ILVA – a deal that ultimately collapsed despite Liberty Steel’s divestment.
Union response
In a joint statement on Thursday, the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) and the Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB) expressed "total disillusionment" after "years of promises." They argue that workers are bearing the consequences of "wrong decisions" by both industrial leaders and policymakers. The unions have demanded an urgent meeting with relevant ministries to seek viable solutions.
