Fake social media activity has already made headlines in Luxembourg this year, with two new cases once again raising concerns about the spread of misinformation.

Fake accounts and misleading posts on social media are becoming increasingly common in the Grand Duchy, often imitating trusted sources like RTL or other Luxembourgish media outlets. These accounts and posts frequently target public figures and politicians to spread false or deceptive messages.

The year 2025 has just begun, but already two new incidents have been reported.

The first case involves a fake account on the social media platform "X" (formerly Twitter) impersonating Minister of Finance Gilles Roth. The fraudulent account, identifiable by an extra "s" in the handle (@RothGilless), falsely claims to represent the minister. The Ministry of Finance has issued a warning, advising users not to engage with messages from the account and to report it if encountered.

In the second case, a fake post bearing the RTL logo has been spotted on Instagram as sponsored content. The post includes a grammatically incorrect headline in English: "This interview could have ended Jean-Claude Juncker career." This post is not genuine, and users are advised to avoid clicking the link and to report the content if they come across it.
