TRIPARTITE TALKS – The first full round of tripartite talks gets under way today, with the government, employers, and unions meeting to discuss measures in response to the economic impact of the Iran conflict. Unions are calling for job protection and a €7 billion investment fund to finance affordable housing and the energy transition.

WARM SPRING – This spring in Luxembourg was warmer than average and drier than usual, particularly in April. Despite the heat and lack of rainfall, crops have so far not been badly affected, but authorities are warning the situation could change if conditions continue.

DEFENCE PROJECTS – Nine research and development projects are to receive funding from the Directorate of Defence, selected from 30 submissions. Among them: a secure platform for tracking military movements without network coverage and a 3D mapping system for difficult terrain. The projects aim to strengthen Luxembourg's defence innovation capacity and deepen ties with EU and NATO programmes.

World

EU ASYLUM POLICY – The European Union has agreed new rules allowing for the creation of return centres in third countries, where rejected asylum seekers who cannot be sent home would be held. Unaccompanied minors are exempt, but families with children could be affected.

UKRAINE WAR – Russia has launched fresh drone and missile strikes on Ukraine, again targeting the capital Kyiv, where buildings were set on fire and residents took shelter in metro tunnels. At least nine people have been killed and dozens injured, with casualties also reported in other cities.

DENMARK GOVERNMENT – Denmark has a new government. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has announced a centre-left coalition - her third term in office - after more than two months and two failed attempts to form an administration.

IRAN WAR – Contradictory signals from Iran and the United States over the state of nuclear talks. President Trump says negotiations are ongoing, but Iran says direct ceasefire discussions have been suspended. The UN Security Council meets today to discuss the conflict, at France's request.

Sport

TENNIS – World number one Aryna Sabalenka defeated Naomi Osaka in a night match, 7-5, 6-3 , to reach the quarter-finals, where she will face the Russian left-hander Diana Shnaider.

FOOTBALL – In national football, Walfer will play in Luxembourg's top division next season after beating Canach 7-6 on penalties last night. Canach are relegated.

Former England and Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan has revealed he has stage four cancer. Keegan's family said in January that he had been diagnosed with the disease after being admitted to hospital for evaluation of "ongoing abdominal symptoms".

ATHLETICS – Luxembourg’s Patrizia van der Weken finished fourth in the women's 100m final at the Diamond League meeting in Rabat, Morocco, on Sunday evening, clocking a time of 11.08 seconds, which is her best of the season so far.

Weather

Today starts off under a cloudy sky, with rain predicted throughout the day into the evening. Storms are also set to roll in from the morning, with the possibility of hail in some areas. Expect up to 15 litres of rain per square metre at points, and winds of up to 60 km/h. Temperatures will remain mild, starting at 12-14°C in the morning, with highs of up to 24°C in the afternoon.
