The tripartite meeting comes as the social partners seek to agree on measures to address the economic impact of the ongoing conflict involving Iran. The main trade unions, the Independent Luxembourg Trade Union Confederation (OGBL) and the Luxembourg Confederation of Christian Trade Unions (LCGB), have jointly put forward a set of demands.
Central to their proposal is the protection of jobs and the creation of a special €7 billion investment fund intended primarily to support affordable housing and the energy transition. Both OGBL President Nora Back and her LCGB counterpart Patrick Dury stressed ahead of the talks that they aimed to negotiate constructively. They also insisted that the country’s wage indexation system should not be called into question.
In a statement issued following the preparatory meetings, the employers’ representatives highlighted the need for robust measures to ensure the continued competitiveness of businesses during the current economic downturn.
Prime Minister Luc Frieden had already insisted ahead of the talks that Luxembourg’s indexation system would not be up for debate.
Meanwhile, General Confederation of the Civil Service (CGFP) President Romain Wolff pointed out that it was only now, at the start of this Tripartite process, that the specific discussion topics were made public.
RTL will broadcast the first conclusions from Tuesday's discussions live this evening. The press conference with Prime Minister Luc Frieden, in Luxembourgish, is scheduled to begin at around 6pm.
