The LSAP parliamentary party sent an open letter to the president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, delineating the negative effects the border controls have on workers, students and businesses alike.

The party demands that the Commission stand up for free circulation within the Schengen area and to ensure that the member states respect their treaties. The reasons behind the letter are the border controls still being carried out at the German border – recently followed by France.

The controls influence the lives of border workers, pupils, and students in an increasingly negative manner, not to mention the businesses and shops located near the border.

The fact that the European Commission does not oppose these measures enough leads to the controls being seen as “normal”, although they violate the fundamental basis of the Schengen area.
