A new scam involving fake parcel drivers who trick victims into handing over their bank cards and PINs is actively targeting residents, particularly the elderly, Luxembourg Police have warned.
The Luxembourg Police have issued a warning following several reports of a scam in which individuals pose as parcel delivery drivers to defraud victims, primarily the elderly.
The fraud begins with a phone call, followed shortly by the arrival of a fake delivery driver at the victim's home. The individual typically claims to be delivering a package from a pharmacy and demands a cash-on-delivery fee.
When a victim attempts to pay by card, the scammer uses a mobile device to initiate a transaction. They ask the victim to enter their PIN and repeatedly press the confirmation button. During this process, the perpetrator secretly swaps the victim's bank card with a nearly identical one issued under a different name. Due to the card's similarity, the swap often goes unnoticed.
The criminals then use the stolen card and PIN to withdraw large sums of money or make unauthorised payments.
In a related development, police recently arrested an individual posing as a fake bank employee. The arrest was made after a potential victim alerted authorities that the suspect had arranged a home visit to collect their bank card and PINs. Several patrols were dispatched, leading to the suspect's interception. The individual was arrested and presented to an examining magistrate on Tuesday morning.
The police urge anyone who has been targeted or fallen victim to these scams to contact their local police station immediately. They also encourage the public to inform elderly relatives and friends about these tactics to help prevent further incidents.
