Luxembourgish Minister of Foreign Affairs Xavier Bettel highlighted the vast number of wars and conflicts currently tearing the world apart, leading to the deaths of countless innocent people.
During the fifth day of the General Assembly’s annual high-level debate, Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Xavier Bettel, expressed Luxembourg's deep empathy with Ukraine while shedding light on the plethora of conflicts happening across the globe.
Calling for a just and peaceful resolution in Ukraine, Bettel drew parallels to Luxembourg's own history of being invaded by its neighbours, emphasising the importance of the EU's role in maintaining peace: "Twice we have been attacked by a neighbour who thought he knew better than us and what was good for our country. We understand Ukraine's suffering."
Bettel also highlighted the challenge of standing in solidarity with all those suffering in conflict zones, Bettel states: "How should you explain to someone in Palestine and Lebanon, in Kyiv, and in so many different places around the world, that we want to leave no one behind?"
Currently, there are 60 ongoing conflicts and another 50 on the brink of erupting, Bettel stated in his speech. "In total, there are 115 real or potential conflicts at this moment," said Xavier Bettel at the UN General Assembly in New York. "Every possible country is concerned, from Congo to Yemen, Syria, Myanmar, Venezuela, Albania, and perhaps tomorrow Azerbaijan. The whole world is affected by conflicts, even if they are not part of our daily lives."
