As pickpocketing surges during peak seasons, Luxembourg City merchants have joined forces in a WhatsApp group to track criminals and prevent repeat offenses.
Restaurant owners and shopkeepers in Luxembourg City have joined forces through a WhatsApp group to share information on thefts and help catch pickpockets.
"This summer was really bad", said Alexandre De Toffol, a local businessman, in an RTL interview. The group allows members to quickly share photos or details of suspects.
In one instance, a pickpocket was immediately identified and arrested thanks to the group.

Exert vigilance
Police prevention officer Tim Pauly emphasised the importance of vigilance. "You should not give the thief an opportunity," he said. Many victims leave carts, bags, or personal belongings unattended in crowded areas, restaurants, or at events like the Foire.
Most thefts involve no violence; criminals rely on distraction, making it essential to keep wallets, phones, and valuables on your person.
Peak periods for pickpocketing include summer, the Foire, and Christmas markets, when crowds make it easier for thieves to disappear.

Filing a complaint
Not all victims file complaints, which hampers police investigations. "I had to convince a tourist to file a report", said De Toffol. "Otherwise, they are free a few days later and continue as before."
Police record and investigate every incident, often working with colleagues across the Greater Region and using international databases. If suspects are not immediately identified, public appeals may be issued months later.
