Luxembourg's National Cooperation Development Agency allocated €136 million to global development projects in 2023, with a significant focus on education despite facing challenges such as the suspension of operations in Niger due to a military coup.
In 2023, Luxembourg's National Cooperation Development Agency, LuxDev, allocated €136 million to various projects across 17 countries. A notable €48 million was dedicated to education projects, with further substantial investments in Burkina Faso, Benin, and Cape Verde. The largest share, €20 million, was meanwhile directed towards initiatives in Laos. Significant amounts were also invested in Senegal, Mali, and Niger.
However, following a military coup in Niger, LuxDev suspended its projects in the country and evacuated expatriate employees and their families.
LuxDev is led by Manuel Tonnar, with Nima Ahmadzadeh serving as the chair of its board of directors. The agency employs around 550 people, working both at the agency's headquarters in Luxembourg City and in offices located in ten countries. The agency's projects span a diverse array of sectors, including education, new technologies, agriculture, inclusive finance, governance, and healthcare access.
