A year has elapsed since the discovery of Diana Santos' body near the French-Luxembourg border, and as of September 2023, the suspect remains in custody, Luxembourg's judicial authorities confirmed on Friday.

Luxembourg's judicial authorities confirmed on Friday that the suspect in the case of Diana Santos' dismembered body - discovered in Mont-Saint-Martin in September 2022 - is still in custody.

The intricacy of this case has prompted authorities to commission roughly twenty forensic examinations and seek international cooperation from Morocco, France, Belgium, and Germany.

Judicial authorities say that around thirty reports have been drawn up and that a raid on the crime scene was organised in July 2023.

This ongoing inquiry is set to continue, with additional expert assessments and requests for judicial collaboration in the pipeline. "The investigation is, therefore, far from concluding," stated the spokesperson for the judicial authorities.

At present, no further details regarding the investigation can be disclosed. The Luxembourg judiciary would like to remind the public that the Grand Duchy adheres to the fundamental principle of the presumption of innocence.

Case background: Diana Santos was a 40-year-old woman with Portuguese roots living in Diekirch when she was found dismembered in Mont-Saint-Martin (a town not far from the Luxembourg border) in September 2022.

Santos was originally from Porto and had been living in Luxembourg for several years. She was the mother of a 22-year-old boy and worked in the restaurant business as a cook's assistant and waitress. She loved karaoke and had an extraordinary voice, the victim's father revealed. Santos was initially identified by her tattoos, with her identity later confirmed through DNA analyses.

Her body was found behind a supermarket by a local teenager. Once established that she lived in Luxembourg, the public prosecutor of Nancy transferred the case to Diekirch prosecution.

A 48-year-old man was arrested in October 2022 in connection with the case.
