Following controversy over the proposed demolition of a 160-year-old windmill near the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) site, a compromise has now been reached.

The Ministry of Culture has confirmed that the windmill tower will be deconstructed, moved, and rebuilt a short distance from its original location. The CHL will cover the costs of the operation.

The site was required for the clinic’s new construction and the needs of the emergency department, making the windmill’s demolition initially unavoidable. After lengthy discussions, a compromise was found. According to the ministry, the 160-year-old structure – classified under Luxembourg’s supplementary inventory – will now be valorised to a greater extent and given more visibility in the future.

The materials will be stored and used for the reconstruction after the second quarter of 2029, at the interchange on Route d’Arlon – Val fleuri, near the tram line.
