The government's new Covid measures announced last week boosted the number of vaccine appointments, says Paulette Lenert. In an interview for RTL Télé, the Minister of Health discussed the immediate future in order to counter the fourth wave.

No one expected the pandemic to become so drastic this winter, Lenert told RTL Télé on Friday evening. However, in light of the government’s announcements, appointments for vaccinations have tripled in the space of a week.

Up to now, the vaccination teams had averaged 300 first-time vaccinations per day, and this has quickly risen to 900. Lenert draws a clear connection between the appointments, the announcements, and the fourth Covid wave which is becoming more pressing in Luxembourg.

Earlier in the day, the generalisation of the Covid-Check at work had been unveiled by the social partners, including all the obligations and sanctions for all employees.

The Minister was keen to point out that the first vaccination does not fully protect an individual against Covid-19. People need to be fully vaccinated, Lenert continued. The goal is to protect people but also to avoid another lockdown.

The application of 2G in leisure time and 3G in the workplace are restrictive measures, but they allow for some normality. The government believes that the measures in place are sufficiently strict for the time being to counter the Covid wave, the minister said.

The government’s recipe remains the same as before: measures to limit the circulation of the virus and a willingness to push for vaccination in order to achieve the highest possible vaccination rate.

In order to make rapid progress with vaccinations, the reopening of the Findel vaccination centre was announced on Friday. The exact date will be communicated as soon as a large delivery of vaccines to Luxembourg is confirmed. But there are still enough vaccines, at least for the first few weeks, says Paulette Lenert.

The first children aged between 5 and 11 could be vaccinated around mid-December. But advice is still awaited before the government takes a position.
