A ceremony will be held on Sunday at the Glacis chapel to remember those who fought against the Nazis in the Second World War.

The 23 Luxembourgers who were shot in Hinzert are remembered as symbolic representatives of all those who died fighting for the Grand Duchy's freedom.

According to the Committee for the Remembrance of the Second World War, no fewer than 1,586 Luxembourgers were deported to Hinzert, 76 of whom were killed for their defiance.

In total around 4,000 Luxembourgish men and women were taken to concentration camps for political reasons, 800 of whom did not survive.

The memorial mass is due to begin at 11am at the Glacis chapel, before a procession on the corner of Rue de la Faïencerie and Allée des Résistants et des Déportés, followed by a ceremony at the Hinzert cross in the cemetery nearby at midday.

The procession will be accompanied by a military band.
