In alphabetical order, the five new MPs covered in this series are Carlo Back, Djuna Bernard, Stéphanie Empain, Marc Hansen, and Carole Hartmann. Having already presented Hartmann, Hansen, and Bernard, this article focuses on Back.
The new Green MP has two core tenets on which he will focus for the next five years in Luxembourg's parliament: mobility and energy. Claudia Kollwelter met the nuclear engineer by trade in Kirchberg to discuss his thoughts on Luxembourg's climate goals.
Kollwelter met the 66-year-old in front of the LuxEnergie building on Boulevard J.F. Kennedy. The meeting place was fitting as Back cited the company as a good example in applying climate change goals, as LuxEnergie focuses on cogeneration and environmental solutions.
Specifically, LuxEnergie burns wood in the form of pallets, which produces heat, which in turn heats up homes and offices in Kirchberg. According to Back, this is an incredibly effective way to use energy.
In terms of Luxembourg continuing in the right direction, Back believes LuxEnergie's example must be followed. There are two aspects where Back believes work is required, which are efficiency and renewable energies.
Specifically, Back thinks that two things in particular must be tackled. First of all, he believes that buildings must be renovated to use as little energy as possible. Second, transport in Luxembourg requires a complete overhaul as the country is still using too much fossil fuel. Prioritising public transport, especially using renewable energy, is Back's key goal.
As the president of the parliamentary commission on mobility, Back believes it is crucial for mobility to be appealing and energy efficient at the same time.
