The man who was shot by police as he attempted to evade a police stop in Bonnevoie on Wednesday should be autopsied today.

The prosecutor's office said in a statement issued last night that it wants to confirm the driver's identity as well as the exact cause of his death.

One of the witnesses that RTL has interviewed, known only by her first name "Chloé" explained that she heard tires squealing then "three shots" before the car hit the tree. Luxembourg's prosecutor says that the inquiry would have to verify this testimony.

What happened?

On Wednesday afternoon, a police car was in Bonnevoie on a routine patrol. That's when, just after 4pm, the patrol came across a driver whose driving and the way his car looked didn't conform with the Highway Code (Code de la Route).

The driver of the vehicle then tried to evade the police as they tried to stop it for a check. In doing so, he struck another vehicle parked in rue des Ardennes. At the intersection with rue Sigismond, a Luxembourg police officer got out of the cruiser and ordered the driver to stop.

The prosecutor stated that the individual first tried to reverse his vehicle before driving towards the officer. "He then used his service weapon" and shot at and hit the driver. The prosecutor said that this use of a firearm would be done under the terms of the law of 28 July 1973 which explains that police officers can use firearms to defend themselves.

Wounded, the man lost control of his car, hitting the facade of a house before ending up crashing into a tree on Léon XIII square, in front of the church. Emergency responders were not able to revive the seriously wounded man and he died of his wounds.
