In response to a parliamentary question about teacher shortages, Education Minister Claude Meisch and Research and Higher Education Minister Stéphanie Obertin revealed that Luxembourg will need hundreds of new teachers over the next five years, particularly in languages and mathematics.
Over the next five years, more than 400 teachers will be needed for the following three languages: German, French, and English. In mathematics, a further 169 positions will also need to be filled.
However, finding candidates for these four subjects is not expected to pose a major challenge. According to data from the Ministry of Research and Higher Education, which tracks state aid for university studies, there are currently around 1,000 students enrolled either at the University of Luxembourg or in foreign universities studying one of these languages or mathematics and statistics.
That said, not all of these students are likely to go on to work in Luxembourg's secondary schools after graduation, as the ministry stated that it has no information on their professional plans.
On a related note, the annual Student Fair will take place in Belval this Thursday and Friday.
