Amazon, which employs more than 1.5 million people globally, is set to cut about 14.000 jobs from as early as Tuesday in a cost-saving push targeting administrative functions.
Various U.S. media outlets, including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and Reuters, earlier reported that Amazon plans to cut around 30,000 jobs as part of a broad cost-saving initiative, with layoffs expected to begin as early as Tuesday. Since then, the tech giants have confirmed plans to reduce its corporate workforce by the reduced figure of 14,000.
The move is intended not only to reduce expenses but also to address the company’s overexpansion during the Covid pandemic, when hiring surged to meet increased demand for online shopping.
The job cuts are expected to focus primarily on administrative functions within the online retail division. In contrast, core areas such as distribution and warehousing, which account for the majority of Amazon’s workforce, are not expected to be affected.
Amazon currently employs more than 1.5 million people worldwide. This round of layoffs would mark the company’s largest workforce reduction since 2022, when 27,000 positions were eliminated.
In Luxembourg, more than 4,000 people currently work for Amazon. According to RTL information, around 100 jobs are affected. On Tuesday morning, a meeting between the staff delegation and management will also take place.
