Ahead of Europe Day on 9 May, 110 young people, from 11 schools across the country, discussed a number of European subjects as part of the Model European Parliament conference, lasting from Monday to Wednesday.

Discussions revolved around the current state of the union, women’s rights, renewable energy, and young people’s health. The conference took place at the Bâtiment Schuman near the Philharmonie in Kirchberg.

The conference was organised by the Lycée Aline Mayrisch. Discussions resulted in interesting conclusions, especially regarding women’s rights and renewable energies, primarily due to the amount of progress made on these issues in recent years. The young participants were well prepared and inspired by past decisions.

The main objective of the conference was to highlight the competencies and skills of these young people. Lycée Aline Mayrisch also offers a special option with the aim of familiarising young people with European politics. In such a conference, it becomes apparent that pupils tend to think European and are engaged in favour of the European Union. They find it unfortunate that the United Kingdom is leaving the EU, underlined the president of the Model European Parliament, Sarolta Szatmari.

An international version of the conference takes place twice a year, with Luxembourg participating as well. According to the young people, the population of Europe does not have sufficient comprehension of the work done by European institutions, hence their drive for information. Maintaining the unity of the Union is their absolute priority.
