Luxembourg is beautiful on a crisp Autumn day, however the weather can be changeable and often uninviting. Come rain or shine, kids are ambivalent and just want to spend time outdoors. Fortunately, Luxembourg has no shortage of places to take them.
Themed walking trails
Not the optimal time of year for a barefoot trail but a kid friendly walk can be a great way to spend some family time.
On the tracks of Charly
Follow the footsteps of Charly, the ancient train running between Echternach and Luxembourg. The walking trail leads from Becher railway station via Altrier, where excavations have uncovered one of the most important Roman settlements on Luxembourg territory. Numerous finds are housed in the National Museum of History and Art.
There are 13 activity stops along this 5.5km educational hike where children can discover and learn surrounded by nature and widlife. End your walk at the playpark next to the train station in Bech where there is also a restaurant. Not suitable for strollers.

The recently renovated playpark at Bambesch is now accessible from the city on bus line 33. See more on this and many other outdoor playgrounds here. Gréngewald and Kockelscheuer forest areas also offer many walking trails and spaces to enjoy nature.

'Robi the Gnome' trail
An easy 3km circular forest trail starting from Hosingen Parc. Kids can explore nature and work on their physical skills and aptitude, ideal for younger children. The trail has nine stations featuring lots of interesting wood carvings of animals, birds and other wildlife.
Children can spot real animals and practice climbing and balancing on rope courses. The trail begins next to the tourist and ecological centre for a visit, too. Arboretum to learn about the diversity of trees and test your tree knowledge.

Fairy Tale Path 'Marchewee'
Short 1km trail with six stations each with wooden sculptures telling the story of a different fairy tale character. Hike in the footsteps of Hansel and Gretel, Pinocchio or Rapunzel. The stations have activities and challenges plus spyglasses along the way to find wood-carved forest animals dotted around.

Free entry and open all year round, seven days a week. Spread over 2 hectares with 150 animals, 25 species such as deer, goats, racoons, parrots, rabbits and more. Kids can climb on one of two play areas or even crawl on all fours through a tunnel to view an animal enclosure up close.
Enjoy a birds eye view of the park from an elevated walkway. The treetop café can fuel hungry tummies and if you fancy visiting for a bit longer, treetop guesthouses accommodate up to four or six guests for a fun mini-break.

A bio-dynamic farm with market garden and Naturata organic shop on site. This educational farm produces potatoes, milk, sausages, salami and veal. The company switched to organic farming in 1999 and their veal and sausage products are processed by the butchery Niessen in Troisvierges.
Lots for kids to see and do plus toy tractors, cars and trucks for kids to zoom around the farm. Popular for kids parties. Prenatal and postnatal yoga sessions are held at Kass Haff every Sunday morning 9am to 1030am. Eltereshoul host an Elterecafe too, where parents can come with or without children to chat over coffee and share parenting experiences.

A small family business and educational farm (MUHlti-KUHlti ) with dairy cattle. As well as offering visits from school children, private guided visits can be arranged on request. These sessions usually run as afternoon activities and are divided primarily into two age groups: two to four years and five to eight years.
The farm is open for people to drop in and look around. Produce is available to purchase via self-service with fresh milk, organic eggs and other items available to buy 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The owners promote the importance of children understanding where food comes from and for them to have access to nature.

Animals here include rabbits, chickens, cows, sheep, ponies, pigs, cats and dogs! Self-service to purchase farm produce including milk and eggs. For meat, you can contact the farm directly. Visits can be organised on request to have contact with the animals, learn about food production, organic farming and help with farm work through their educational programme. Hosts birthday parties.

This educational farm accepts visitors Tuesday through Saturday to discover life and work on this modern dairy farm. Home to cows, calves, rabbits, and ponies. Learn about the different stages of milk production and you can even give it a go. Contact directly for more info.

Luxlait Vitarium

Keeping with the dairy farming theme, although it is indoors and no animals are kept here. Kids can explore 45 fun and interactive workstations learning about all things dairy, the human body and nutrition physiology. Outdoor playpark at the front. Free Luxlait product included with every ticket. Daily guided tours available and bistro and cinema on site. Hosts birthday parties and private functions.
Ostrich Farm

Worth a mention although not open to the public, group tours of 1.5 hours can be arranged by request along with tasting of farm produce such as salami and pastry. Home to approximately 300 ostriches where the sandy soil in Contern affords perfect natural living conditions. Also 60 dairy cows and farm cereals such as wheat.
Events occasionally held such as ‘The Ostrich Festival’ which took place in May 2024.
Urban green spaces
Luxembourg City is on the smaller side compared with some of our European counterparts but over of a quarter of the city is urban green space. There are over 200 recreational areas including playgrounds, multi-use sports fields, facilities for ball games, pétanque courts and skate parks across the city districts. Attend a festive friendly event at one of the city parks or just meander and let the kids play and kick up the Autumn leaves.

Entry to the museum is at a fee but the beautiful ‘Garden of the five senses’ can be enjoyed by everyone free of charge. Navigate a huge Corn Maze, play on the multi-sports field, try the oversized hanging musical instruments, spot frogs in the pond or zoom on the zipline. Grab lunch at the bistro, the terrace backs directly onto the garden with large playground, climbing frames and swings.

Beautiful park spanning 45 hectares with lots to explore plus play areas and oversized garden games. Kids have fun standing on the bridge which straddles Luxembourg and France, putting one foot in each country.
Luxembourg’s Aviation Museum sits bang in the middle of the park too, where kids can learn about the developments in aeronautics over the last century and marvel at the oldest wooden plane to have flown in Luxembourg.
Biodeversum Nature and Forest Centre

Perfect for walking trails, bird watching and wildlife spotting. If you need to shelter from the rain, the indoor exhibits are free entry and cover the history of nature conservation, the underwater world, birds, plants, and other conservation areas in Luxembourg. Free entry, too.
Highlights the wealth of flora and fauna and diversity of bird species we have here. Kids enjoy the taxidermy and interactive nature activities. All about sustainability and care for the environment, so a great lesson for the kids.

Rural and Artisanal museum gardens

A step back in time where you can take a horse carriage ride, kids can clamber the preserved agricultural machines all while learning about farm life circa 1849. A great history lesson for the kids, going back to a time before organic farming when everything was naturally grown and all agricultural machinery was man-powered.
An imitation medieval village and gardens to roam and observe a wide variety of vegetables, spices and medicinal plants. Workshops held here, too. Playground on site and a brasserie.

We are fortunate to have an abundance of outdoor spaces to explore with the kids not to mention numerous parks, such as Merl Park, the Kockelscheuer playground, the Airplane playpark or the Municipal Park's well-known pirate ship. Not to mention the Petrusse Park aka 'The Green Lung of the City', outdoor climbing, scenic cycle routes and more.
