Scottish alternative rock icons Idlewild return this autumn with news of their first album in five years.
Simply titled Idlewild, the band's 10th studio release lands on 3 October via V2 Records, marking a reflective yet forward-looking chapter in their nearly 30-year journey.
The first taste of the new record arrived this week with the single Stay Out Of Place, a sweeping, melody-rich track that premiered on BBC 6 Music with Steve Lamacq – and here in Luxembourg on NEW NOISE with Stephen Steps Lowe.
Frontman Roddy Woomble says the song explores identity and collaboration: "There is more than one 'us' in there… sometimes you’ve got to shake up expectations and forget about the instructions."
Produced by bandmate Rod Jones, Idlewild was recorded throughout 2024 at Post Electric Studios in Edinburgh and the Isle of Iona Library in the Hebrides. The album brings together the many creative strands that have defined the band since their formation in 1995. From the raw punk energy of their early days to the chart-bothering anthems of The Remote Part, and the expansive, genre-blending approach of their more recent work.
Across ten new tracks, the band revisit and reimagine their sound with a renewed sense of purpose.
Idlewild’s history has been defined by continual evolution – from spiky punk beginnings through to lush indie-rock, thoughtful folk, and textured art-pop.
With Idlewild, the band are said to be embracing "every facet" of their sonic past "without relying on nostalgia". Instead, they reflect with intention, crafting songs that celebrate their unique musical identity. "For the first time we were referencing ourselves", says Woomble. "Not in a nostalgic way, in a positive, creative way."
Idlewild will be available on CD, standard black vinyl, and two limited-edition coloured LPs.
