The majority of people tend to retire between 60 and 64 years of age. Fewer work until age 65, although this is the legal retirement age in Luxembourg. Most people can retire after 40 years of service.
In the public sector just 8% of people work until 65 or beyond, while in the private sector some 23.5% people continue to work.
7% of civil servants enter retirement at 55 or 56 years of age, and 23% between 57 and 59 years of age.
The majority of retirees in the last five years worked in construction (14%). They were able to benefit from their pensions at the ages of 57-58 thanks to 40 years of work.
The data above was supplied in a ministerial response to a question submitted by the DP’s Gerard Schockmel.
Next Thursday the Chamber of Deputies will vote on the new pension reforms. The 40 years of work or contributions will gradually and progressively increase for people wanting to retire early.
