BILINGUAL ROAD SIGNS – Luxembourg has installed new bilingual welcome signs along motorways at its borders. The signs greet motorists in Luxembourgish and each neighbouring country’s language as part of a government initiative to promote the national language.

FLU WAVE Flu cases in Luxembourg have more than doubled in a week, rising from 182 cases to 367 cases, or a 102% increase. The Health Ministry reports most infections are in children and adolescents, with influenza A accounting for nearly all cases.

HOUSE FIRE – A fire broke out in a house attic on Avenue Berchem in Howald yesterday evening, spreading to a neighbouring property. Residents were evacuated safely and 40 firefighters brought the blaze under control by 10pm.

ARCHIVES MOVE – Luxembourg’s National Archives are moving to Belval by the end of next year. Currently spread across multiple sites, the collection holds 50 kilometres worth of records from government ministries and public services.

World

EU COMBUSTION – The European Union is set to withdraw plans to ban the sale of new combustion engine cars from 2035. Following discussions with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, German MEP Manfred Weber says manufacturers will instead face a 90% reduction target for CO2 emissions, rather than an outright ban. According to Weber, the EU Commission intends to present this as a proposal in the coming weeks.

NATO WARNING – NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has warned that Russia will not limit itself to Ukraine, saying the Alliance could be Vladimir Putin’s next target. Speaking in Berlin with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, he stressed the need to prevent war before it starts.

THAILAND ELECTIONS – Thailand’s King has dissolved parliament amid a border dispute with Cambodia, where clashes have killed at least 20 people and displaced around 600,000, mostly in Thailand. Elections must be held within sixty days.

EUROVISION PROTEST – Last year’s Eurovision winner Nemo is returning their trophy in protest at Israel’s continued participation. Iceland has become the fifth country to withdraw from next year’s contest, with Belgium, Finland and Sweden yet to decide.

TIME PERSON OF THE YEAR – Time Magazine has named the leaders of Artificial Intelligence companies as its Persons of the Year, featuring Jensen Huang of Nvidia, Sam Altman of OpenAI, Lisa Su of AMD, and Mark Zuckerberg of Meta.

FOOTBALL– In the Europa League‘s sixth matchday, Stuttgart thrashed Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-1, Roma won 3-1 at Celtic, Porto beat Malmö 2-1, and Freiburg edged Salzburg 1-0.

In the German Bundesliga this evening, Union Berlin host RB Leipzig in the opening match of the fourteenth round, kicking off at 8.30pm

A referee was hospitalised with facial injuries after being assaulted by a Diekirch player at an U17 match at the weekend. The player, who had been sent off, threw a piece of wood at Carlo Cardoni 20 minutes after the final whistle. Diekirch say he will never play for the club again

SKIING – The first womens’ downhill race is taking place in St Moritz in Switzerland today. Olympic champion Michelle Gisin has undergone emergency spinal surgery after a high-speed crash during training yesterday.

Weather

It’s cloudy, foggy and dry throughout the day. There is little or no sunshine expected, although there may be some brief sunny spells in some places. Temperature-wise we are looking at 6-7 degrees this morning and only hitting highs of 8-9 degrees, 10 along the Moselle in the afternoon.
