Four Luxembourg athletes are set to compete on the world stage in Tokyo, bringing national records, breakout performances, and valuable experience to this year’s competition.
Patrizia van der Weken will represent Luxembourg in the women’s 100m. The 2024 Sportswoman of the Year secured qualification in May with a time of 11.05 seconds. Recent performances in Brussels and Zurich fell short of that mark, but she heads to Tokyo eager to test herself against world-class competition, entering as an outsider in a highly competitive field.
Middle-distance runner Vera Bertemes-Hoffmann has earned her place in the 1,500m, ranking 38th among 56 qualified athletes. Her consistency throughout the season has paid off. In 2025, she lowered her personal bests over 1,500 and 3,000m and set a national record in the 5,000m at the national championships. Earlier this summer in Poznań, Poland, she added another national record over 1,500 meters with a time of 4:05.58.
Ruben Querinjean delivered one of the season’s biggest surprises at the Diamond League meeting in Brussels. The 23-year-old stormed to victory in the 3,000m steeplechase, setting a new Luxembourgish record of 8:09.47 and defeating a world-class field. Already crowned University World Champion earlier this year, Querinjean has established himself as one of the rising stars of international athletics.
Charel Grethen also secured qualification via the world rankings. The 2021 Olympic finalist brings valuable experience, having reached the semifinals of the 1,500m at both the 2022 and 2023 World Championships. He will once again look to advance deep into the competition.
