Marie Schreiber continued her stellar cyclo-cross season with a historic World Cup victory in Hulst on Saturday.
Luxembourg's Marie Schreiber delivered a remarkable performance on Saturday, claiming victory in the 4th round of the Elite Cyclo-Cross World Cup in Hulst, Netherlands.
The Luxembourg champion, who has been in excellent form this season, began her campaign strongly with a win at the opening round of the French Cup in Nommay at the end of October. She carried that momentum into Hulst, where she triumphed in challenging muddy conditions, finishing with a commanding lead.
For the 21-year-old, this marks her first-ever World Cup win – a historic achievement, as no female cyclist from the Grand Duchy has ever accomplished this feat before. It also represents her fourth overall victory of the winter season.
Schreiber crossed the finish line 20 seconds ahead of former world champion Lucinda Brand and 28 seconds ahead of another Dutch competitor, Puck Pieterse.
The Luxembourg rider set the tone early, leading from the start and distancing herself from her rivals with a blistering first lap time of 8'37''. She maintained a steady pace on subsequent laps, consistently clocking times around nine minutes, keeping her lead between 15 and 24 seconds throughout the race.
Two other Luxembourg cyclists, sisters Maïté and Layla Barthels, also participated in the event. Maïté Barthels finished 62nd in the overall standings but retired on the fifth lap, while Layla Barthels (74th) exited the race a lap earlier.
