Luxembourg international Leandro Barreiro scored his first-ever Champions League goal on Tuesday night as Benfica Lisbon secured a 2-0 victory over Ajax Amsterdam, earning their first points of the current Champions League campaign.
Barreiro sealed the win in the 90th minute after a neat one-two with Fredrik Aursnes sent him through on goal, allowing the midfielder to finish calmly past the Ajax goalkeeper. The goal made Barreiro only the second Luxembourg player in history to score in the Champions League.
The first was Sébastien Thill, who found the net in 2021 during Sheriff Tiraspol’s famous 2-1 win over Real Madrid.
Barreiro's late strike capped a strong individual performance on a positive night for Benfica, who had previously struggled for results in this season’s competition.
