
RESILIENCE STRATEGY – Luxembourg residents are most concerned about cyberattacks, nuclear accidents, and a possible economic and financial crisis, as well as flooding and extreme weather. The findings come from a survey of 1,500 people commissioned by the government to help residents prepare for a crisis. A practical guide is due out in October, setting out what to do in different scenarios. Officials say resilience is the responsibility of individuals as well as the state.
ICE SCULPTURE TRIAL – A verdict is due today in the trial over the 2019 Christmas market ice sculpture accident, in which a two-year-old boy died. 10 people are on trial for involuntary manslaughter, including the sculpture's creators and municipal officials from the Luxembourg City Tourist Office.
GOOGLE FINE – The EU's top court in Luxembourg is today deciding whether to uphold a record €4.1 billion fine the bloc slapped on Google for anti-competitive practices related to its Android operating system. It is the second attempt by the US tech giant to overturn the penalty imposed by the European Commission in 2018 – which remains the bloc's highest ever antitrust fine.
ONLINE DANGERS – Police and prosecutors have described a hidden world on social media and gaming platforms targeting children and teenagers, involving extreme, sadistic violence. Victims are coerced through blackmail into acts including arson, animal cruelty and self harm, sometimes filmed and shared online. Authorities say legal tools to tackle online violence must be strengthened as they urge parents to monitor their children's internet use.
UKRAINE WAR – Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv early today, killing eight people and wounding dozens. It followed a warning from President Zelensky that Moscow was preparing a massive attack, prompting him to cut short a visit to Dublin yesterday.
VENEZUELA EARTHQUAKES – Search and recovery efforts continue a week after the twin earthquakes in Venezuela, with the death toll nearing 2,000 and expected to rise. Aid agencies warn of a worsening humanitarian crisis, with thousands displaced, overcrowded shelters, limited access to clean water, and growing fears of disease.
TAYLOR SWIFT WEDDING – Media attention is expected around reported wedding celebrations for Taylor Swift and fiancé Travis Kelce. US media report that the A-list festivities will kick off this evening with an exclusive dinner at Madison Square Garden tonight, followed by a larger celebration on 3 July. The couple has not confirmed the reports.
CANADA EUROVISION – Canada will take part in next year's Eurovision Song Contest, expanding participation in the world's biggest live televised music event to the Americas for the first time. Canada is the first new country to join Eurovision since Australia in 2015.
Football World Cup – In World Cup news, USA beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 to reach the World Cup last 16. Folarin Balogun scored before being sent off. England came from behind to beat Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in Atlanta. Harry Kane scored twice late on. England face co-hosts Mexico in the last 16 on Sunday. And Belgium beat Senegal 3-2, fighting back from 2-0 down. Youri Tielemans scored a stoppage time winner, the latest goal in World Cup history.
Tonight at 9pm, Spain play Austria, Portugal face Croatia at 1am, and Switzerland play Algeria at 5am tomorrow.
BASKETBALL – Luxembourg's men's basketball team play Azerbaijan tonight at the Coque in European Championship pre-qualifying. Luxembourg won the reverse fixture in Baku last November. A win tonight keeps their hopes alive ahead of Sunday's match against North Macedonia. The game starts at 7pm.
TENNIS– Novak Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets – 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 – to reach the Wimbledon third round for the 20th time. He continues his pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title and an eighth Wimbledon crown. Meanwhile, French Open champion Mirra Andreeva was knocked out in the second round, losing 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 to Barbora Krejcikova. The Wimbledon champion of 2024 next faces compatriot Nikola Bartunkova.
