Luxembourg

TAKEOVER STOP A Chinese takeover of Wiltz-based firm Circuit Foil has been cancelled due to regulatory conditions imposed by Luxembourg authorities. Circuit Foil is a global leader in the production of specialised thin copper foils and the deal would have seen Chinese company Defu acquire 100% of Circuit Foil’s shares for €174 million.

TAX AUTHORITY REFORM – The Luxembourg Inland Revenue (ACD) is launching a major modernisation programme ahead of planned reforms. The ACD will overhaul its IT systems, restructure its offices, and train staff in an effort to improve digitalisation and efficiency

HEALTHCARE REPORT – A new report praises Luxembourg’s healthcare system as efficient and well-aligned with population needs, compared to other European nations. It also notes high costs and unnecessary hospitalisations for chronic conditions.

OZEMPIC – Luxembourg’s Health Ministry says semaglutide medications such as Ozempic and Rybelsus will only be reimbursed for type-2 diabetes patients and not to help weight loss. The health authority says it is keeping the door open to possible future coverage of obesity treatments, following new guidance by the World Health Organisation.

World

IRAN PROTESTS – US President Donald Trump has urged Iranian protesters to continue demonstrating, saying “help is on its way”, although he did not provide any details. Human rights monitors are reporting that over 2,000 have been killed in the nationwide demonstrations.

US-GREENLAND RELATIONS – US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are meeting Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers today, as tensions rise over American interest in Greenland. European nations, including Britain and Germany, are considering boosting their military presence there. A joint Danish-Greenlandic statement is expected later.

KIEFER SUTHERLAND ARREST – Actor Kiefer Sutherland has been arrested in Los Angeles on suspicion of assaulting a ride-share driver. The 59-year-old star of “24" and “The Lost Boys” was released on bail. Police say the driver was not seriously injured.

HEAT RECORD2025 was the world’s third-hottest year on record, capping the warmest 11-year period ever measured. EU monitors say global temperatures have now exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for three consecutive years. Scientists warn the warming trend shows no signs of slowing, with 2026 expected to rank among the hottest years as well.

FOOTBALL – In the German Bundeliga, Borussia Dortmund won 3-0 against Bremen, Mainz won 2-1 against Heidenheim, and Stuttgart beat Frankfurt 3-2 last night.

Manchester United confirmed Michael Carrick as interim manager until the end of the season on Tuesday, tasking him with leading the Red Devils back into the Champions League. He has a daunting first task, preparing his men to face local rivals Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

CYCLINGJonas Vingegaard said he plans to “mix it up a bit” in 2026 by racing the Giro d’Italia for the first time, but added that when judging a season, everything comes down to the Tour de France. The Dane was speaking in a video interview released by his Visma team to coincide with their season launch in La Nucia, Spain.
