In a recent travel advisory update, the US government is urging US citizens planning to visit Belgium to "stay aware of [their] surroundings", particularly in popular tourist areas where it says crime is common. The advisory also warns of the potential for terrorist activity and civil unrest, recommending visitors remain vigilant throughout their stay.
Belgium is currently classified as a Level two destination under the US State Department's Travel Advisory system, alongside neighbouring countries including France, Germany, Spain ,and the Netherlands.
A Level two advisory is not a warning against travel. Instead, it advises travellers to "exercise increased caution" because of moderate risks such as crime, terrorism, civil unrest, or other security concerns. The US State Department uses a four-tier advisory system to help American citizens assess potential risks when travelling abroad. Level one, "exercise normal precautions", is the lowest advisory level, while Level 4, "do not travel", is reserved for destinations considered the highest risk.
As part of its guidance, the State Department recommends enrolling in its Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive updates and emergency alerts, monitoring local media, and remaining alert, particularly in busy tourist areas.
Luxembourg, meanwhile, remains one of the few countries in the region to hold an overall Level one advisory, although certain parts of the country are designated Level two. According to the State Department, most of Luxembourg is considered "a safe destination", but some areas in the north and east carry a higher advisory level because of unexploded ordnance left behind from the First and Second World Wars.
These higher-risk zones are concentrated in areas where the Battle of the Bulge was fought in 1944–1945. Old artillery shells and other unexploded explosives can still occasionally be found, particularly on farmland and construction sites.
While the advisory highlights potential risks, it does not discourage travel to any of the countries mentioned. Instead, it encourages visitors to remain vigilant and take sensible precautions throughout their stay.
