
FATAL ACCIDENT – A 49-year-old man, who was seriously injured last Tuesday in a workplace accident at the Gadderscheier industrial estate near Soleuvre, succumbed to his injuries over the weekend and passed away.
DEFENCE BONDS – In a bid to involve the public directly in national security funding, Luxembourg is offering a “Defence Bond” for investment, with subscriptions opening on Thursday at 2pm. The three-year bond is designed to help fund national defence and security initiatives, with the interest earned being tax-exempt for residents.
CHILD CARE – Education Minister Claude Meisch has presented the main aspects of a €300 million reform set to ensure every child has a place in day care by 2030. The reform includes the standardisation of pricing rules across all day care centres and the adjustment of the financial aid scale to better target relief for families.
EUROPEAN SCHOOL – The Luxembourg government plans to acquire two plots of land in Strassen to build a new European School, a project set to be presented to the Parliamentary Finance Committee today. The school will be designed to accommodate up to 1,900 pupils and will include sports halls and a swimming pool.
EUROVISION SONG CONTEST – While it is not yet known which act will be representing Luxembourg at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, we now know that Luxembourg is set to perform in the second semi-final on 14 May, alongside countries including Albania, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Australia, and Ukraine.
TRUMP VS IRAN – US President Donald Trump has announced a 25% tariff on any country doing business with Iran, ramping up pressure as a rights group estimated a crackdown on protests has killed at least 648 people. Iran’s main trading partners are China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, and Iraq.
VENEZUELA MEETING – US President Donald Trump is expected to meet Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado at the White House this week, following her meeting with Pope Leo today at the Vatican. The meeting would be their first since the US forces seized the then President Nicolás Maduro on 3 January.
LE PEN TRIAL – The appeals trial against Marine Le Pen begins today in Paris. The far-right leader and her party Rassemblement National face charges of embezzling EU funds. Le Pen risks four years in prison, a heavy fine, and a five-year ban from running for office if convicted.
FARMERS DEMO – Farmers are demonstrating in Paris today against the EU-South America Mercosur trade deal. Hundreds of tractors rolled toward the capital last night after protesters blocked ports and roads yesterday. The agreement is set to be signed Saturday despite fears it will hurt European agriculture.
GERMANY-US MEETING – German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul says the partnership with the US remains strong after meeting Secretary Marco Rubio in Washington. The two discussed Ukraine, NATO commitments, and Greenland. Wadephul sees no signs the US would seize Greenland by force, adding that NATO is developing security proposals for the Arctic region.
UKRAINE WAR – The UN Security Council held an emergency session yesterday over recent Russian attacks on Ukraine, including the deployment of nuclear-capable medium-range missiles. The US condemned the strikes as a dangerous escalation threatening peace efforts. The UN is also reporting that 2,500 civilians died in Ukraine last year, the highest toll since the 2022 invasion, with over 12,000 injured.
FOOTBALL – Luxembourg football player Brian Madjo’s transfer from FC Metz to Aston Villa has now been completed, reportedly for €12 million on a five-year contract.
Real Madrid have announced that coach Xabi Alonso has left the Spanish giants by mutual consent, to be replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa, a day after the team lost the Spanish Super Cup final against Barcelona.
A new Luxembourg football club is giving children with disabilities their own place to play. ‘Bananenflanke Lëtzebuerg’ holds weekly training sessions in Betzdorf, creating a supportive environment where every player can participate fully.
