A new football club in Luxembourg is creating a dedicated space for children and young people with intellectual or physical disabilities to play the sport.

Named ‘Bananenflanke Lëtzebuerg’, the club holds its weekly training sessions in Betzdorf, offering a supportive environment where every player can participate fully.

The club was founded by Jens Wilbert, whose teenage son has Down Syndrome and a passion for football. Wilbert saw his son struggle to keep up in mainstream settings, leading to frustration. After discovering the inclusive German club Bananenflanke in Trier – where his son began playing and Wilbert became a coach – he was inspired to establish a local chapter.

“We want the children to feel comfortable and identify with the club. Because they deserve a football club just like everyone else”, says Wilbert.

Supported by volunteer coaches, the club runs weekly sessions and aims to develop into a team capable of competing against others.

Families interested in enrolling a child can find more information and registration details on the club’s website at team-bananenflanke.lu.
