A 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed shortly before 10am this morning in Petrisberg, near the University of Trier

A 23-year-old man was fatally stabbed shortly before 10am on Wednesday morning on Robert-Schuman-Allee in Petrisberg, not far from the University of Trier. Emergency responders attempted to resuscitate the victim at the scene, but he later succumbed to his injuries, according to a statement from the Trier police.

The suspected attacker, also a 23-year-old man, fled the scene immediately after the stabbing. Police were able to locate and arrest him a short time later as part of a coordinated search operation.

The area surrounding Robert-Schuman-Allee, including the university grounds, were cordoned off by police for several hours. The criminal investigation department has taken over the case, but the motive for the attack remains unknown. As the incident took place in a public space, several people are believed to have witnessed the events. Specialist trauma counsellors were on hand to support those present at the scene.

Trier police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident but has not yet contacted authorities to come forward. Witnesses can call +49 651 983-43900 or submit information, including photos or videos, via the official police evidence portal.

Police have also urged the public not to upload any footage or images of the crime to social media, both out of respect for the victim's family and to avoid hindering the investigation.

Figure of the day

Luxembourg's civil service has seen an increase of more than 6,000 employees since 2021, with 38,918 people now employed.

  • Moreover, the number of employees in the highest salary category, known as A1, has grown by approximately 3,000 over the past five years.
  • When measured in full-time equivalents, this translates to 2,698 additional staff members in this career group alone. Among the public services seeing the most growth were the tax authorities and the judiciary, both of which received a large number of new posts. These figures were provided by Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Minister for the Civil Service Serge Wilmes in response to a parliamentary question submitted by Ben Polidori, member of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP).
