
GAZA FLOTILLA – The Israeli navy has intercepted vessels from the international Gaza aid flotilla in international waters west of Cyprus, some 250 nautical miles from Gaza. Organisers say around 400 people have been detained in what they are calling an Israeli attack, among them two Luxembourg residents whose whereabouts remain unknown. Israel is defending the operation, dismissing the flotilla as a provocation.
WOLF ATTACKS – Farmers in northern Luxembourg suspect a wolf is behind the deaths of four calves that have occurred since last week, in the area between Brachtenbach and Eschweiler. Photos from the latest incident show an animal with flesh gnawed to the bone. The Nature and Forest Agency has yet to carry out official analyses to confirm the cause.
STATE OF THE NATION – Luxembourg's Prime Minister Luc Frieden is delivering his annual State of the Nation address to parliament this afternoon. The speech comes amid ongoing talks with social partners over the economic impact of the Iran conflict and its effect on people's cost of living. MPs will debate the declaration tomorrow.
ICE SCULPTURE DEATH – A verdict is due on 2 July in the trial over the 2019 Christmas market ice sculpture accident in Luxembourg City, which claimed the life of a child. Monday's final hearing focused on damages claims brought by the civil parties.
US SHOOTING – Three people have been killed in a shooting at a mosque in San Diego, California, including a security officer. Two teenage gunmen, aged 17 and 18, opened fire before turning their weapons on themselves. Police say the attack appears to have been motivated by hate.
IRAN WAR – President Trump says he called off a major military strike on Iran that had been planned for today, following appeals from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The Gulf states believe a diplomatic deal remains possible. Trump says serious negotiations are underway, but warned that American forces stand ready to act if talks fail.
PUTIN CHINA – Russian President Vladimir Putin is on a two-day visit to China at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. The talks are expected to focus on trade and strategic cooperation, with Russia's oil and gas exports to China high on the agenda. The Iran conflict, the war in Ukraine, and last week's visit by President Trump are also likely to feature.
OPENAI COURT – A federal jury has ruled that Elon Musk waited too long to sue OpenAI and its co-founders over the company's shift to a for-profit model. The verdict hands a major victory to the ChatGPT maker and clears the way for its future IPO plans.
SHAKIRA TAX – Spain must repay Shakira more than €55 million after a court ruled she was wrongly classified as a tax resident in 2011. The repayment covers income tax, fines, and interest. Shakira welcomed the ruling, saying the court had finally set the record straight.
FOOTBALL – Arsenal are on the verge of the Premier League title after beating Burnley 1-0 yesterday. Manchester City must win tonight against Bournemouth to keep the championship race alive. Meanwhile, manager Pep Guardiola is reported to be leaving City at the end of the season.
TENNIS – Luxembourg's Chris Rodesch begins his French Open qualifying campaign at Roland-Garros today, taking on Swiss player Leandro Riedi, ranked 45 places above him at world number 121.
Jannik Sinner heads into the French Open as the most overwhelming favourite to win the men's title and with the career Grand Slam firmly in his sights.
