As part of the action plan to promote the Luxembourgish language, the government presented new bilingual welcome signs, which will be installed along motorways near the country’s borders from Thursday. The signs, an initiative headed by the Ministry of Culture and the Roads and Bridges Administration, welcome motorists in Luxembourgish and the language of the respective neighbouring country, as well as bidding them farewell on the lanes leaving the Grand Duchy.
“When we greet tourists, cross-border workers and international guests, both at the borders or at the rail stations, with a heartfelt ‘Wëllkomm’ in our own language, we underline our identity and our openness towards the world. In a country where so many languages meet on a daily basis, Luxembourgish remains a bridge to our lively, multicultural, and tolerant society, where everyone has a place and should feel at home”, declared transport minister Yuriko Backes.
Currently eight signs will be installed on the A6, A3, A13, and A1 motorways, followed by more signs on national roads later on. Ministers Eric Thill and Yuriko Backes said this visibility measure for Luxembourgish in the public space would underline the country’s national identity, as well as showing appreciation of multilingualism.
The signs carry the “LuXembourg – Let’s Make It Happen” motto and will be visible from Thursday afternoon.
