On Thursday, the Ministry of Health published its weekly report on respiratory infections such as influenza, Covid-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
In the first week of December, the number of flu cases detected in Luxembourg’s laboratories doubled, jumping from 182 cases to 367 cases, or a 102% increase. The Ministry of Health said the majority of infections had been detected in children or adolescents. From 1 to 7 December, 99.7% of cases were influenza A and 0.3% influenza B.

These figures confirm the start of the “seasonal flu wave”, said the Ministry. It added that it was still possible for people to seek flu vaccinations, and as of this year, all flu vaccines are free of charge for children under 18. “Vaccination is still the most reliable way to prevent seasonal flu and to reduce the risk of associated complications”, the Ministry wrote.
An increase of 59% was observed in RSV infections, jumping up from 101 cases last week to 161 in the latest report. Since October 2025, 73% of infections have affected children under the age of nine, indicating that the virus is more likely to affect the youngest members of society.
The number of SARS-CoV-2 infections has also increased from 51 to 91 cases over the first week of December, or a 78% increase.
According to the latest sequencing data, the XFG variant (54,2 %) and its sub-variant XFG.3 (29,1 %) are dominant. However, the viral concentration in Luxembourg’s wastewater has reduced.
