POLICE TRIAL – Four police officers go on trial today in Luxembourg City accused of torture and assault after allegedly beating an intoxicated man at the train station police station during the 2023 Night Marathon and attempting to cover it up. The officers have been suspended.

PET SCANNERS – Two new PET scanners for cancer diagnosis have been inaugurated at Luxembourg City’s hospital centre this week, significantly cutting patient waiting times and increasing the number of patients that can be scanned each day.

BUDGET DEBATE – Luxembourg’s budget marathon continues today with Finance Minister Gilles Roth’s presentation, followed by debates and a vote. Yesterday’s report focused on fighting poverty.

LUXEMBOURG SONG CONTEST – Tickets go on sale at 5pm today for the Luxembourg Song Contest grand final at Rockhal on 24 January, where Luxembourg’s representative for Eurovision 2026 in Vienna will be chosen.

DRY JANUARYThe Luxembourg government has launched its first-ever Dry January campaign, urging people to take a collective month-long break from alcohol. The Ministry of Health highlights that alcohol is the second leading preventable cancer risk after tobacco and was linked to 7% of deaths in Luxembourg in 2019.

World

TRUMP ADDRESS – President Donald Trump has announced he will deliver a live address to the nation from the White House tonight around 3am our time – but he has not revealed the subject of the speech. Meanwhile, the US president has ordered a complete blockade of Venezuelan oil tankers and designated the Maduro government a terrorist organisation, demanding the return of nationalised oil fields. Venezuela calls the moves “a grotesque threat” and a violation of international law.

RUSSIA/UKRAINE – A two-day EU Summit begins tonight in Brussels focusing on using frozen Russian funds to help Ukraine and strengthening ties with Western Balkan countries including Albania, Serbia, and Kosovo ahead of potential EU membership. Russia has rejected proposals from the Berlin-Ukraine summit, including a multinational peacekeeping force and a Christmas ceasefire suggested by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Russia continues to insist that Ukraine must give up a large part of its territory with no NATO troops allowed.

EU CARS – The European Union has scaled back its 2035 ban on new petrol and diesel cars, now requiring a 90% emissions cut instead of 100%, allowing limited sales of polluting vehicles beyond the deadline to support Europe’s struggling auto industry.

LIVERPOOL ATTACKER SENTENCED – A man has been jailed for over 21 years for deliberately driving into crowds celebrating Liverpool’s Premier League victory, injuring injuring 134 people. Prosecutors called it a road rage attack causing scenes of horror and devastation.

BASKETBALL – The New York Knicks have ended their 52-year trophy drought with a 124-113 NBA Cup final victory over the San Antonio Spurs.

BOXING – YouTuber Jake Paul faces former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in Miami on Friday in a controversial Netflix bout criticized as a dangerous mismatch. The fighters are splitting a reported $184 million purse despite major safety concerns from boxing authorities.

FOOTBALL – France and Paris Saint-Germain attacker Ousmane Dembele has won the men’s FIFA Best award at a ceremony in Qatar, while Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonmati collected the women’s prize. And, FIFA has introduced a new $60 budget ticket category for all 104 matches at the 2026 World Cup in the US, Canada and Mexico following fan backlash over high pricing for the tournament.
