Dry January is already an annual staple for millions of people across the globe, and now, the national health sector has decided to join in, too. In a press release, the Ministry of Health calls on the population to take a “conscious break” from consuming alcohol for at least the entire month of January.
The aim here is to raise awareness on its health effects but also encourage people to reflect on their drinking habits. Alcohol is the second leading preventable risk factor for cancer, just after tobacco, as the Ministry reiterates. In 2019, 7% of all deaths in Luxembourg were linked to alcohol, according to an OECD study.
The public is invited to register on dryjanuary.lu for regular advice and tricks on how best to stick with the challenge.
