
SPACETY SANCTIONS - The Chinese firm Spacety Luxembourg, based in Belval, is in the sights of the Luxembourg judiciary. The company stands accused of providing satellite images to the Wagner mercenary group, which is currently fighting for the Russians in the Ukraine war. Spacety has been referred to the state prosecutor, due to possible violations of EU sanctions. It has been on the US sanctions list since the end of January.
CORONAVIRUS MEASURES - After meeting yesterday, the Chamber’s health commission has decided to lift the main remaining coronavirus measures regarding isolation and mandatory mask-wearing. MP Mars di Bartolomeo, president of the health commission, stressed that the mandatory wearing of masks might be maintained in the health and care sectors, but that this would no longer be regulated by law.
SPEED CAMERAS - Watch out on the roads tomorrow. Three new average speed cameras start operating in the Stafelter, Grouft, and Gousserlerbierg tunnels from Wednesday. The average speed cameras will measure motorists’ tempo throughout the tunnels on the A7 motorway. The speed limit here is 90 km/h.
MICHELIN RATINGS - The famous Michelin restaurant guide has unveiled its new rating for Belgium and Luxembourg. The gluten-free restaurant Eden Rose in Kayl was awarded its first Michelin star. Seven restaurants in the Grand Duchy, including La Distillerie in Bourglinster and Léa Linster in Frisange kept their one-star rating while Ma Langue Sourit in Oetrange managed to hold on to both of its Michelin stars.
AUKUS PACT - The leaders of the US, Australia and the UK, meeting in California have given details of a defence pact, that will provide Australia with nuclear-powered attack submarines. The AUKUS pact is designed to counter China’s growing military power. President Biden said it would boost security in the Asia-Pacific region for decades to come.
NORTH KOREA MISSILES - North Korea has fired two short-range ballistic missiles earlier today. It is Pyongyang’s second launch in three days. Yesterday the country fired two “strategic cruise missiles” from a submarine in apparent protest over joint US-South Korea military exercises.
GERMANY SHOP CLOSURES - One of Germany’s last major department stores is set to close nearly 40% of its remaining shops, just two years after the most recent closures. German department store chain Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof plans to close 52 of the remaining 129 stores across the country, putting around 5,000 jobs at risk. According to local German media the two stores in Trier will stay.
ATHLETICS - The Luxembourg athlete Peter Murphy has set a new national record at the World Championships in Seoul, South Korea. He ran 1500 meters in 2 minutes, 16 seconds and 15 hundredths. He comes in 43rd place.
FOOTBALL - The second leg of the round of 16s in the Champions League is taking place tonight. Inter Milan has a 1-0 advantage over Porto and Manchester City plays Leipzig.
ATHLETICS FOSBURY - Athletics legend Dick Fosbury, who revolutionised high jumping with his signature “Fosbury flop” has died. He was 76. Fosbury’s agent said in a statement that the 1968 Olympics gold medallist had died peacefully in his sleep early Sunday from lymphoma.
Meteolux has issued another weather warning for today with wind gusts forecast to sweep across the country. We can expect another rainy and windy day, especially during the first part of the day, with wind gusts of up to 65 and 75 km/h forecast throughout the country. The afternoon’s forecast is overcast with predominantly rain showers. The morning will start off with temperatures of 7-9°C, rising slightly to around 9-11°C in the afternoon.
