BRONCHIOLITIS OUTBREAK - Hundreds of children had to see a doctor following the bronchiolitis epidemic, that started in October. 253 children were hospitalised at the Kannerklinik, as of 5 December. Almost 400 children were examined but not hospitalised. The Centre Hospitalier, CHL, has created a crisis unit to deal with the outbreak and increased the number of beds, in order to accommodate more patients.

BIANKA TRIAL - Today the Bianka Bisdorff trial begins, after being delayed by a day. Bianka’s mother stands accused of the murder, homicide and assault of her one-month-old baby girl, who went missing 7 years ago. The trial will start this morning with a report by the investigators.

ELECTIONS POLL - If elections were held in Luxembourg this Sunday, the government coalition would have 33 seats in the chamber. That is a plus of 2 mandates more than after the 2018 elections. In a Politmonitor survey, the big winners are the Socialist Workers Party LSAP and the Pirate party. The Christian Social People’s Party party, CSV, would be the biggest loser. -6 seats compared to the last election.

BUS CABINS - From next month, glass cabins will be added to buses to give drivers more protection. Minister of Mobility Francois Bausch made the announcement in the Chamber yesterday, following reports of increased attacks on bus drivers this year.

US MIDTERMS/TRUMP -

The Democratic party has won a run-off in the US state of Georgia, securing them a 51-seat majority in the Senate. The victory by the incumbent Raphael Warnock, will make governing easier for President Biden. It is also a further blow to Donald Trump’s ambition to return to the White House, after he strongly endorsed the Republican candidate. A court in New York has convicted Donald Trump’s family property business of 17 counts of tax fraud and other financial crimes. The Trump organisation was found guilty of running a criminal scheme, that provided luxury perks to many executives, which weren’t taxed. It now faces a fine of more than 1.5 million dollars.

UN COP 15 - The UN conference on biodiversity begins in Canada today. Representatives from almost 200 countries meet in Montreal to try to hammer out a deal for nature: a 10-year framework aimed at saving the planet‘s forests, oceans and species, restoring sensitive eco systems and limiting pesticides.

WORLD CUP - Portugal is the last team to qualify for the quarter finals with a 6-1 win against Switzerland last night. The Portuguese striker Goncalo Ramos started in place of Cristiano Ronaldo and scored the first hat-trick of the tournament. The Portuguese team will face Morocco, who have reached the quarter finals for the first time in their history after winning in a penalty shootout against Spain.

RUGBY JONES - England’s Rugby Football Union have announced that head coach Eddie Jones has been sacked from the post, just nine months from next year’s World Cup. Jones has paid the price for presiding over England’s worst year since 2008, the team losing six out of 12 Tests, with five wins and a draw. He is the second head coach to be fired in 24 hours -- Wayne Pivac has been replaced as Wales boss by his predecessor Warren Gatland.

After some light rain and sleet during the night, this Wednesday promises to be very cloudy with a chance of snowflakes flying over from the Ardennes. We won’t be seeing much sun, but most of the day will remain dry with temperatures staying low between 0 and 3 degrees.
