Luxembourg

HOUSING PRICES – Luxembourg has been ranked the most expensive country in Europe to buy a new home, with an average price of €8,760 per square meter, according to Deloitte's 2025 Property Index. The annual survey, which examines housing markets in 28 European countries, highlights that affordability in the Grand Duchy remains under severe strain despite a slight easing of mortgage rates across the continent.

PHISHING SCAM – An eagle-eyed reader alerted the RTL newsroom to the latest phishing attempt, involving an email that falsely claimed to come from the Luxembourgish government. The message used the address ‘etal.lu’ instead of the official ‘etat.lu’, a subtle but important detail. Please be vigilant.

TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS – There were a number of incidents reported on the Luxembourg roads yesterday, including a multiple car pile-up on the A6 and a crash in Eich following a high-speed police chase.

NEW PETITIONS 24 new petitions have been uploaded to the Chamber of Deputies website. Some of the topics reflect popular stories within the media over recent days: one petition demands a new bank holiday on 3 October to mark the new Grand Duke's accession to the throne, while another calls for a clear no to the right to abortion in the constitution.

CHINA WARNING – China has warned Papua New Guinea after they signed a defence deal with Australia, which will see the two countries commit to defending each other. Asked about the deal, a spokesperson for Beijing's embassy in Port Moresby said China respected Papua New Guinea's right to strike deals with other countries. But such a deal should not be "exclusive", nor restrict Papua New Guinea from cooperating with other countries, the spokesperson said late Thursday.

NORTH KOREA DRONE TEST – North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw a test of an attack drone and ordered greater use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the technology, state media said Friday. Images shared by the official Korean Central News Agency showed the unmanned vehicle taking off and then destroying a target.

TAIWAN SATELLITES – Taiwan's space chief Wu Jong-shinn says the "clock is ticking" for the democratic island to launch its own satellites to secure internet and phone services during a potential conflict with China. The island faces the constant threat of an invasion by Beijing, which claims the island is part of its territory and in recent years has intensified military pressure.

Kipyegon will defend her title in the women's 5,000 metres final, while Wanyonyi is looking to add world gold to his 800m Olympic crown.

BASEBALL – Los Angeles Dodgers pitching great Clayton Kershaw tearfully insisted he was "not sad" as he announced yesterday that he will retire after the Major League Baseball season. Kershaw is a two-time World Series champion and three-time Cy Young Award-winner, has spent all of his 18 seasons with the Dodgers.
