TRAIN ACCIDENT – A person was hit by a train at Leudelange train station yesterday evening at around 7.15pm. The police this morning confirmed that the man died of his injuries. Due to the incident, train traffic between the city and Dippach-Reckange has been affected. There are replacement buses in place and CFL says there may be delays and cancellations on line 70 between the city and Longwy and Athus.
SPUERKEESS FINE – Spuerkeess maintains its staff followed protocol and that external actors orchestrated the Caritas fraud, as the bank seeks to distance itself from a CSSF fine targeting "structural" oversight gaps. In a press release, Spuerkeess addressed recent accusations, reiterating that the fine imposed by the CSSF was unrelated to the Caritas fraud case.
INFLATION RATE – The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) has reported that Luxembourg's annual inflation rate rose slightly to 2.3% in July, up from 2.2% the previous month. This marginal increase occurred despite a month-to-month deceleration in price growth. The next wage indexation remains projected for the third quarter of 2026.
NEWCASTLE DISEASE – Luxembourg authorities have confirmed a case of Newcastle disease in a wild pigeon found in the Moutfort municipality. Health officials emphasise that the disease poses no risk to human health.
World
RYANAIR STRIKES – Ryanair’s ground staff have called a general strike at all Spanish airports. The action is set to begin on 15 August in protest against alleged overtime abuse and disciplinary sanctions imposed on workers. According to a union press release, the strike will take place on 15, 16, and 17 August, then continue every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday until 31 December 2025. Flights departing from Luxembourg airport could be affected as Ryanair connects Findel with Madrid, Barcelona, Palma, and Seville.
GERMANY ROBBERY – A violent robbery has been reported in Traben-Trarbach, a German town just 70 kilometres off the border. According to Trier police, three unidentified suspects attacked two men who were sitting in a parked vehicle at the time. The attackers were reportedly partially masked and at least one of them was armed with a firearm. Police are still searching for the suspects and have asked the public for help.
FRANCE WILDFIRE – A woman has died, one person is missing, and nine people have been injured in a wildfire in southern France that has burned an area larger than Paris. The blaze, which started on Tuesday afternoon, has destroyed or damaged 25 homes in the Aude department, where 1,500 firefighters have been battling to extinguish it.
US TARIFFS – Higher US tariffs came into effect for dozens of economies today, drastically raising the stakes in President Donald Trump's wide-ranging efforts to reshape global trade. US duties have risen from 10% to levels between 15% to 41% for a list of trading partners.
UKRAINE WAR – Donald Trump says he could meet with Vladimir Putin "very soon", following what the US president described as highly productive talks in Moscow between his special envoy and the Russian leader. The potential summit was discussed in a call between Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky that, according to a senior source in Kyiv, included NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and the leaders of Britain, Germany, and Finland.
GAZA WAR – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to convene the security cabinet today to discuss next steps in Gaza operations. Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch is set to release a report claiming Israeli attacks on Gaza schools sheltering civilians underscore the lack of safe spaces for displaced Palestinians.

TENNIS – Karen Khachanov rallied from 3-1 down in the final set tiebreaker to defeat top seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7/4) to reach the final of the ATP Toronto Masters. The 11th seed from Russia will play the final against Ben Shelton, who upstaged compatriot Taylor Fritz in two sets last night.
In women's tennis, four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and Canadian teen sensation Victoria Mboko have booked a championship showdown with gritty semi-final wins in the competition.
FOOTBALL – Bayern Munich and Germany forward Thomas Mueller has signed with Major League Soccer's Vancouver Whitecaps. Mueller announced earlier this year that he would be departing from Bayern Munich - his home for 25 years. His tenure included 13 Bundesliga titles and two Champions League triumphs.
SWIMMING – Luxembourg is making a strong showing at the 2025 World Aquatics Masters Championships in Singapore, with 21 swimmers from seven clubs competing across 76 events in both open water and indoor pool disciplines. The open water races were held at Sentosa Island from 26 to 27 July; standout results in the 3km race included Nicole Feitler of the Cercle de natation Dudelange finishing 7th in the Women's 65–69 years, and Julia Emilia Ervio of the Luxembourg Sharks Swimming Club placing 12th in the Women's 30–34 category. The indoor swimming events are scheduled for 7–14 August.
