AIR RESCUE – A coordinated rescue operation by Luxembourg Air Rescue, the LAR and the Grand Ducal Fire and Rescue Corps successfully saved an injured cyclist on Sunday afternoon. Given the location's inaccessibility, a helicopter form the LAR was called in to perform an air rescue in coordination with a specialised high-altitude rescue team. After being airlifted from the difficult terrain, the young man was transferred to a nearby location, where an ambulance took him to hospital for treatment.
MISSING PERSON – 14-year-old Charlene Mayara Monteiro Lima has been missing since 2pm on Saturday, 2 August 2025. The teenager is 1.65 meters tall, has black hair, and a slightly darker skin tone. NON-NATIONAL CHILDREN – According to new data from Eurostat, Luxembourg recorded the highest proportion of non-national minors in the European Union in 2024, with 45.7% of children under 18 holding a different citizenship from their country of residence. These figures are more than double than that of Austria and Malta – the next highest-ranking countries.
POPULATION DATA – Luxembourg is one of just six EU countries to record more births than deaths in 2024 – standing in contrast to France, where the national statistics office INSEE is reporting a negative natural population balance for the first half of 2025. Luxembourg’s fertility rate, however, hit a historic low of 1.25 children per woman, suggesting that longer-term trends remain a concern.
TV SERIES RETURN – Confirmation was a long time coming, but with the recently announced support from the Luxembourg Film Fund, crime fans can rejoice: a third series of Capitani and a second series of Marginal are both in the works. Inspector Luc Capitani and his young protégé Elsa Ley, played by Luc Schiltz and Sophie Mousel will return to their roles for series three of the popular show. Marginal is based on real crimes and tells the stories behind Luxembourgish cases and the justice system behind them. It is expected to be aired at the end of 2026.
World
SHIP SINKING – According to the UN’s migration agency, at least 68 migrants are dead and 74 more missing after a ship sank off the coast of Yemen. Tens of thousands of migrants make the crossing to Yemen every year in search of work in Saudi Arabia and the wealthy Gulf states. According to medics, rescuers are still looking for survivors.
GAZA WAR – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has requested the help of the International Committee of the Red Cross to deliver food and medical assistance to Israeli hostages still held in Gaza. The request came days after Palestinian militant groups released videos of two Israeli hostages held in Gaza appearing emaciated. The videos make references to the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, where UN-mandated experts have warned a "famine is unfolding".
SPAIN PLANE CRASH – Spanish emergency services on Sunday found the bodies of a father and son who were in a plane that crashed off the coast of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. Press reports said it was a stunt plane that had been performing acrobatics before crashing into the sea on Saturday evening.
UKRAINE WAR – President Donald Trump has confirmed his special envoy Steve Witkoff will visit Russia in the coming week, ahead of a looming US sanctions deadline and escalating tensions with Moscow. Speaking to reporters, Trump also said that two nuclear submarines he deployed following an online row with former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev were now "in the region".

CYCLING – French rider Pauline Ferrand-Prevot has won the women’s Tour de France on her first attempt. The 33-year-old finished 3:43 ahead of 2023 champion Demi Vollering from the Netherlands. After sealing victory, she said she had achieved “the goal of her life as an athlete”.
FORMULA 1 – Lando Norris has won the Hungarian Grand Prix after holding off a thrilling late-race challenge for the lead from McLaren team mate Oscar Piastri.
FOOTBALL – Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min has announced that he will leave the club this summer. The 33-year-old South Korean joined Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen and will leave after helping Spurs win the UEFA Europa League last season, their first trophy in 17 years.
RUGBY – The British and Irish Lions were denied a perfect tour as they were beaten 22-12 by Australia in their final summer Test. Andy Farrell’s side have won the overall Test series.
ATHLETICS – Noah Lyles, the reigning Olympic 100m champion, will attempt to defend both his 100m and 200m world crowns at the World Championsips in Japan, aiming to emulate Usain Bolt with a fourth consecutive world 200m gold. The 28-year-old from Florida warmed up for that challenge in Eugene on Sunday by clocking a world-leading 19.63 seconds.

The day kicks off with cloudy skies and light rain showers, though these will steadily move eastward as the day progresses. Drier conditions and thinner clouds are expected towards the afternoon. Morning temperatures will hover at around 12–14°C before rising to 21–23°C in the afternoon.
