Fans of Luxembourgish crime series Capitani and Marginal can look forward to new series coming soon.

Confirmation was a long time coming, but with the recently announced support from the Luxembourg Film Fund, crime fans can rejoice: a third series of Capitani and a second series of Marginal are both in the works. RTL spoke to creators Thierry Faber and Loïc Tanson about the upcoming sequels.

Capitani

The first episode of detective series Capitani was screened on RTL Télé Lëtzebuerg back in September 2019, introducing viewers to Inspector Luc Capitani and his young protégé Elsa Ley, played by Luc Schiltz and Sophie Mousel respectively.

The two actors will return to their roles for series three of the popular show. Although creator Thierry Faber was coy about details, he confirmed there would be a link to the fictional village of Manscheid shown in the first series. "Much will be different," he revealed. "But some elements remain the same."

In the new series, Capitani himself will return to police work and will investigate a number of attacks in northern Luxembourg alongside Ley. The characters, along with their actors, have naturally aged a bit, and this will be reflected in the plot. The relationship between Capitani and Ley will also change.

Faber highlighted that the Film Fund's financial assistance merely means that the first stage of the series - the writing - has been approved. The script will follow, along with development, casting and then finally production, shooting and post-production.

During this initial stage, a file is created and submitted to the Film Fund as part of the funding application. Faber clarified this was not a full screenplay, but simply tells the story of the characters and provides an outline of the first episode, as well as a proposed budget.

Marginal

The more recent Luxembourgish true crime series Marginal attracted plenty of viewers when it aired in February. The historical show is based on real crimes and tells the stories behind Luxembourgish cases and the justice system behind them.

In the first series, prosecutor Albert Henrotin and his young sergeant Léon Clemens delve into fascinating investigations, immersing the audience in mysterious cases and moral dilemmas.

For the second series, creator Loïc Tanson spent nine months working on a script. This time, Albert and Léon are investigating judges and attempting to redress the balance of errors in the justice system, researching complex crimes, while the escalating global war forces them to work together with their worst enemies for the greater good.

The new series, which will also be made up of four episodes, will take place between 1909 and 1917, against the backdrop of World War I. Locations include the capital, Mondorf-les-Bains, Kleinbettingen, Mecher, Larochette, Peppange and the casemates. Alongside Jules Werner and Timo Wagner in the main roles, the cast will include series 1 familiar faces such as Marie Jung, Philippe Thelen, Margarida Domingos, Jeanne Werner,  Marc Baum and Guy Helminger.

Filming will start in early 2026, with the series expected to air at the end of next year
