Luxembourg 

POST CYBER ATTACK – The Minister of the Economy Lex Delles says it is not yet known who was behind the cyberattack on Luxembourg’s Post network last week, nor where it originated. Delles added that Post is currently analysing its cooperation with its suppliers and is searching for additional back-up solutions. Delles also confirmed that the crisis communications sent out via the LU-Alert service were insufficient. The relevant departments have been put to work on improving the clarity of such messages in future.

FUEL PRICES – The price for unleaded petrol goes up in Luxembourg today. Unleaded 95 petrol is rising by 2.5 cents to €1.48 per litre, while premium unleaded goes up to €1.59 per litre – an increase of 2.8 cents.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING – The Housing Fund (Fonds de Logement) put 106 properties on the market last year, according to their latest activity report.  This represents a slight increase on 2023, when the Fund completed 85 homes. The aim is to bring around 5,000 new flats to the market over the next two decades to counter the housing shortage.

BARN FIRE – Emergency services rushed to Colpach in western Luxembourg yesterday evening after a fire broke out in a barn on Rue de l'Eglise.No fewer than twelve fire brigades were deployed to the scene. The blaze, which began at around 6.30pm, was ultimately contained. Authorities confirmed no injuries were reported.

World

US TARIFFS –  President Donald Trump has ordered the reimposition of tariffs on dozens of trading partners -- his cornerstone strategy for reshaping global trade to benefit the US economy. However, in a minor reprieve that opens the door to further negotiations, the White House said these measures will take effect in a week, not today as previously expected. The EU and UK are among the countries who have made deals with the United States but Trump has raised Canada’s tariff rate to 35%, which came into effect at midnight.

GAZA WAR – US special envoy Steve Witkoff will visit Gaza today to inspect aid distribution sites. According to the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, he will secure a plan to deliver more food and meet with local Gazans to hear firsthand about the dire situation on the ground. The visit follows a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu yesterday. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul also met Netanyahu in Jerusalem, and afterwards said that he had the impression that the Israeli government understood that it must act quickly, safely and effectively to provide humanitarian and medical aid to prevent mass starvation.

UKRAINE WAR – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged his allies to bring about "regime change" in Russia, hours after a Russian drone and missile attack on Kyiv killed 16 people including a six-year-old boy.The overnight strikes reduced part of a nine-storey apartment block in Kyiv's western suburbs to rubble and wounded at least 150 people in the capital. Speaking to a conference marking 50 years since the signing of the Cold War-era Helsinki Accords, Zelensky said he believed Russia could be "pushed" to stop the war.

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE – Singer Justin Timberlake has gone public with his diagnosis of Lyme disease, calling it a “relentlessly debilitating” condition that left him struggling with nerve pain and fatigue on stage.

Sport

FOOTBALL – This weekend marks the start of the championship in the top division of national football and in addition to the live ticker, matches will once again be streamed. RTL Luxembourg, the Luxembourg Football Federation (FLF) and the Luxembourg Football League have agreed to continue their collaboration to broadcast the BGL Ligue live. From August, each season will feature more than 480 live matches, including a selection from the Coupe de Luxembourg. All matches will be available live or on replay via RTL.lu and the RTL Play app.

In other football news, UNA Strassen lost to Dundee United 1-0 in the 2nd round of their Conference League matches. This makes Differdange the only Luxembourg team still in the 3rd round of the Conference League qualification games. 

SWIMMING – China's Yu Zidi said she felt "quite emotional" after the 12-year-old became the youngest swimmer in history to win a world championships medal. Yu received a medal as a member of the Chinese relay team.  Meanwhile, swimming superstar Leon Marchand has won the 200m individual medley world gold to go with beating the world record that had stood since 2011 on Wednesday with a new time of 1min 52.69sec.
 
FORMULA 1 – Max Verstappen ended weeks of speculation about his future on Thursday when the reigning Formula One world champion said he would be staying with Red Bull in 2026.Verstappen said it was time to "stop all the rumours".

CYCLING – Maeva Squiban secured a home win on the sixth stage of the women's Tour de France on Thursday, as history-maker Kim Le Court held on to her overnight lead. Today's seventh stage will see the peloton arrive in the Alps, with a hilly 159.7km run from Bourg-en-Bresse to Chambery on the cards.

Weather

The morning is set to be cloudy with light rain, but things do look like they will brighten up a little in the afternoon with the sun set to make an appearance, although we can expect showers into the evening. Temperatures will be very similar to yesterday – around 12–15°C in the morning, reaching a maximum of 22°C in the afternoon.
