Luxembourg

ATM EXPLOSIONS – Luxembourg police are probing possible links between a series of ATM explosion attempts, including the latest in Saeul on Wednesday night. Unknown suspects attempted to blow up an ATM on Rue de Mersch in Saeul, which followed recent attempts in Oberpallen and Reisdorf. Authorities suspect the culprits are from abroad. As a result, Luxembourg police are collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies in neighbouring countries.

ACCIDENTSTwo separate accidents in Luxembourg yesterday have left three people injured, including a head-on collision in Kopstal and a tractor crash in Diekirch. The collision occurred on the CR101 road between Kopstal and Schoenfels shortly before 3pm on Thursday, leaving two people injured. Emergency services, including the Emergency Medical Assistance Team (SAMU), and paramedics from Lintgen, responded to the scene.

FLU CASES – The number of flu cases in Luxembourg has increased by 18% in just one week, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Health. While flu infections continue to climb, Covid-19 cases are showing a downward trend. In contrast, infections caused by Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Covid-19 have declined.

CROSS-PARTY APPEAL – In a rare show of cross-party unity, young politicians from Luxembourg’s four major political parties have penned an open letter urging the government to address the growing threat of disinformation and political instability. In the letter, the politicians identify disinformation, particularly through social media, as a significant challenge.

STORM EOWYN – Millions of people have been urged to stay at home today, as Storm Eowyn is to bring potentially life-threatening winds to Northern Ireland and parts of Scotland. The UK Met office has issued red weather warnings, which means there is a danger to life from windgusts blowing up to 160 km/h.

TRUMP ORDERS – A US federal judge has blocked President Trump’s order to end automatic citizenship for babies born on American soil. The judge in Seattle said the order was unconstitutional. Several lawsuits are challenging Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship for children born to undocumented migrants and foreign visitors.

DECLASSIFICATION – US President Trump has ordered the declassification of the last secret files on the assassination of president John F. Kennedy, a case that still fuels conspiracy theories more than 60 years after his death. Trump signed an executive order that will also release documents on the 1960s assassinations of JFK’s younger brother Robert F. Kennedy and civil rights leader Martin Luther King.

UNICEF REPORT – According to UNICEF, extreme weather has disrupted the schooling of about 242 million children in 85 countries last year – roughly one in seven students, deploring an “overlooked” aspect of the climate crisis. Heat waves had the biggest impact, the report showed.
