EU MEETING – EU accession negotiations with Albania enter the second phase today on the sidelines of a meeting of European ministers in Luxembourg. The talks will focus on the democratic institutions in Albania, as the country struggles with high levels of corruption and organised crime.

FATAL ACCIDENT – Luxembourg police have launched an appeal for witnesses related to a fatal accident between Frisange and Alzingen yesterday. Preliminary information indicates that the motorcyclist lost control over his bike while overtaking a bus and fell. He ended up in the opposite lane, where he was caught in a collision with two cars. In this context, the police are looking for other eyewitnesses that may be able to provide more information regarding the cause of the accident.

FUEL PRICES – Following a 3.5-cent increase ten days ago, diesel prices at Luxembourg's service stations are once again on the rise. From today, the per-litre price of diesel rises to €1.449 in Luxembourg, an increase of 2.3 cents. Petrol prices remain stable, but the price of heating fuel also sees an increase of 2.3 cents, reaching €0.905 per litre.

GASTRO AWARDS – The Gault&Millau gastronomic guide has once again honoured Luxembourg's most talented chefs in its annual award ceremony on Monday. François Jagut, chef of the Les Roses restaurant at the Casino 2000 in Mondorf-les-Bains, was voted Chef of the Year 2025, thereby succeeding Louis Linster from restaurant Lea Linster.

World

MIDDLE EAST CONFLICT – The United Nations says its peacekeepers in Southern Lebanon will not move from any positions, defying calls by Israel to withdraw. Several troops have been injured in the Israeli military offensive against Hezbollah. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he regretted the injuries but has repeatedly asked peacekeepers to leave combat zones, accusing Hezbollah of using them as human shields. The UN has about 9,500 soldiers in southern Lebanon.

EU MIGRATION – Italy is transporting a first group of migrants to Albania aboard a navy ship, activating a controversial plan to process thousands of asylum seekers abroad. Giorgia Meloni's government has built two reception centres in Albania, the first such deal, sparking criticism from human rights groups.

EU leaders will meet later this week in Brussels, with migration on their official agenda. Among other things, they will discuss strengthening the external border and accelerating the pace of returns. Poland's government has already announced it is planning to suspend the right of people to claim asylum if they have entered the country from Belarus.

GOOGLE NUCLEAR – Google has signed a deal to use small nuclear reactors to generate the vast amount of energy needed for artificial intelligence. The agreement with Kairos power aims to bring the first plant online by the end of this decade.

Sport

FOOTBALL – Luxembourg is playing against Belarus in the UEFA Nations League at 9pm tonight. They are playing on neutral ground in Hungary, as Belarus supports Russia in the Ukraine war and is therefore not allowed to organize home matches in Belarus. No spectators are allowed either. Two more results from the Nations League matches yesterday: France beat Belgium 2-1 and Germany won against the Netherlands 1-0, securing their place in the quarter-finals.

French football star Kylian Mbappe has vehemently denied allegations of rape currently under investigation by Swedish police, dismissing the claims as "fake news" linked to his ongoing financial dispute with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain.

KARATEFilip Todorovic, a 15-year-old member of Karaté Club Strassen, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing the top spot in the World Karate Federation (WKF) global rankings. This impressive accomplishment comes after his outstanding 5th-place finish at the World Karate Championships.

LUXEMBOURG SPORTS – Luxembourg Sports Minister Georges Mischo has announced new priorities for 2025. The aim for next year is to further strengthen Luxembourg's sports sector and to work on the necessary infrastructure. Mischo spoke about the simplification of administrative processes, the ideal use of sports infrastructure, as well as the training and sensitisation of athletes and trainers. His priority is to make Luxembourg sports more professional.
