MURDER LUXEMBOURG CITY - A case of domestic violence has ended in tragedy in the Gare district of Luxembourg City. A 25-year-old man beat his 20 year old wife to death with a hammer. He was arrested and appeared before the examining magistrate yesterday. The couple’s five-month old baby has been taken into protective custody.
SMOKE DETECTORS - From the 1 January 2023, smoke detectors will be mandatory in all homes in Luxembourg. Minister for Home Affairs Taina Bofferding reminded residents of this new regulation in a press conference yesterday, stressing that "smoke detectors save lives!". International data confirms that smoke detectors reduce the number of victims in flat and house fires by a quarter. From January, they must be installed in bedrooms and stairwells.

UKRAINE ADVANCES / AID - Ukraine’s President Volodymr Zelensky has said his troops are making rapid advances against Russian forces. In his nightly video address, he asserted that in the past week alone, dozens of settlements have been recaptured in the south and east of the country. Meanwhile US President Biden has promised another 600 million dollars of military aid to Ukraine. According to reports, EU member states are closing in on a deal to impose a price cap on Russian oil. This would be the EU’s package of sanctions against Moscow.
MUSK TWITTER - Elon Musk, the world’s richest person has agreed to go ahead and buy Twitter. He spent months trying to back out of the 44 million dollar deal, but the dispute was due to go to court later this month.
SOUTH KOREA MISSILES - South Korea and US troops have carried out a series of missile firings a day after North Korea launched a ballistic missile over Japan. Defence officials in Seoul said 4 short range weapons were successfully fired at targets off the coast. They said the exercise was to deter further provocations by Pyongyang.
NOBEL CHEMISTRY - After medicine and physics, the third scientific Nobel Prize will be announced today - chemistry. The announcement in Stockholm is expected shortly before noon.

TABLE TENNIS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS - In table tennis, the Luxembourg women's national team is playing today in the round of 16 of the table tennis world championship in China. They are playing against Portugal.
FOOTBALL CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - Last night was the third group game day in the Champions League. Among the results: Milan beat Barcelona 1-0,Bayern won 5-0 against Pilsen, Bruges continues to surprise and also won the third match, with 2-0 against Atletico Madrid. And Liverpool beat Glasgow 2-0. Today, among other games, Sevilla will play against Dortmund.
RUGBY HEAD INJURIES - Rugby chiefs must take urgent action to reduce head injuries after a study indicated that former international players are 15 times more likely to develop motor neurone disease. Academics, who studied around 400 former Scottish internationals, found that, overall, the ex-players were about 2.5 times more likely to develop neurodegenerative disease than expected, compared to members of the general population.
