The government has taken a significant step toward greater recognition of the Luxembourgish language at the European Union level by overseeing the translation of the EU’s four foundational treaties.
A key prerequisite for this enhanced recognition is the translation of these core texts: the Treaty on European Union, the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU, the Euratom Treaty, and the Charter of Fundamental Rights.
Minister for Culture Eric Thill announced the completion of this project in the Chamber of Deputies on Tuesday afternoon. However, he clarified that the government will not seek to make Luxembourgish an official language of the EU.
Consequently, there will be no routine translation of EU documents into Luxembourgish nor simultaneous interpretation of speeches into the language.
