The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (STATEC) reported that at the end of 2025, 494,000 people were working in the Grand Duchy. 47% of them were cross-border workers, and only one in four employees held Luxembourgish nationality.

Their recent figures also show that residents are increasingly working in less “traditional” arrangements, such as full-time with permanent contracts with standard daytime hours from Monday to Friday.

In Luxembourg, only 34% of workers have what is considered a “typical” job – full-time employment with standard daytime hours (8am to 5pm). The remaining 66% are in more atypical forms of work, such as part-time roles and fixed-term contracts (CDD).

While less than one in five residents work shifts in their primary job, one third work at least occasionally after 6pm, while 15% work at night. In addition, 29% of residents work on Saturdays and 21% on Sundays. While most of these non-standard arrangements are fairly evenly split between men and women, part-time work stands out: women are roughly three times as likely as men to be employed part-time.

When it comes to family leave, 63% of residents between 18 and 54 who have had children and are currently or were employed have taken some form of family leave. This includes maternity or parental leave. Among them, women account for 77% compared with 48% of men.

Working from home remains relatively widespread, with 36% of employees regularly working from home. Among these, 14% work less than 8 hours a week from home, 78% between 8 and 31 hours per week, 8% more than 32 hours. The teleworking numbers which soared during the pandemic have since remained relatively steady.
